The Fabulous Trashwagon

Author: Burt S. Levy
Average review score:

Good but not great
"The Last Open Road" was great, I loaned it to twenty friends, car nuts and non-carnuts, and gave copies as gifts. Everyone loved it. This is the second sequel (and probably the last from the way the plot developes). If you enjoyed the first two you'll enjoy this as well but, standing alone, it's not as good as the second ("Montezuma's Ferrari") which wasn't as good as the first.

Typical Burt
Well, I read this book in one day. Started it, and 24 hours later I was done. Didn't want to set it down. If you liked Burt's previous two books, I'll bet you like this one as well.

What supprised me the most was reading about some of the folks who Buddy meets along his adventures and thinking "Hey, I know/knew those folks, too." It certainly made the book more interesting for me.

The only down side was, since I had a preview edition, there were enough typos to be distracting. Shouldn't be an issue as the final version is supposed to be out.

Burt does get extra credit for having the advertising section in the middle of the book. It's a great idea.

The Lady in the Tower
Published in Paperback by Fawcett Books (August, 1991)
Author: Katharine Newlin Burt
Average review score:

good read but not always accurate
If you are looking for a good read than this is definately a book for you but if you are looking for a schoraly book on the life of Anne Bolyen I would point you away from this book and toward Alison Weir's The Wives of Henry VIII. This book is historical fiction & follows the life of Anne Bolyen from her childhood, through her 8 year quest for the Crown of England, the birth of her daughter Elizabeth, and turbulant marriage to King Henry, to her trial and death. Although the book is a good read, I did not feel that Anne's personality was accurately portrayed. I felt that the author was often to kind to her and neglected to point out her fault such as excessive pride and her ability to alienate her would-be supporters.

Entertaining Historical Fiction
Jean Plaidy's written a winner that any fan of Tudor history will surely enjoy! Anne Boleyn is quite the tragic heroine in this highly readable and absorbing retelling of her legendary rise and fall.

Our country's presidents
Published in Unknown Binding by The Society ()
Author: Frank Burt Freidel
Average review score:

Our Country's President (G. Washington - LBJ)
George Washington's voice faltered -- he was "unpracticed in . . . civil administration," he said, when he took office in 1789 as the first President of the United States. The new government he led was a gamble, liberty itself at stake.
In personal glimpses such as this, OUR COUNTRY'S PRESIDENTS, by Frank Freidel, gives a new depth to figures everyone remembers. It reveals personalities and policies with carefully chosen detail and keen insight.
"His Accidency" John Tyler rose from his chair to warn the Cabinet he inherited from President Harrison, "I can never consent to being dictated to . . . . I, as President, shall be responsible for my administration." For the first time a Chief Executive had died in office. But "Tyler Too" insisted that the office lived, all its powers as complete as ever, unbrokwn and undying.
OUR COUNTRY'S PRESIDENTS shows how men too easily forgotten sustained the pattern of integrity that Washington had set with unfaltering courage.

This book presents the men America chose. Its 248 pages contain more than 280 illustrations, 173 of them in color. It appears as the first in the National Geographic Society's new series of Special Publications. Dr. Melville Bell Grosvenor, President and Editor, calls this series "as rich in interest and varied in scope as the Society's magazine itself."

Great overview
The 5-10 page descriptions of our first 40 presidents (the edition I read ended with Ronald Reagan still in office) provide a literally colorful look at America's history. Each description includes the presidential portrait and is accompanied by plentiful photographs and contemporary illustrations. The book is a collection of a 5-part series National Geographic published some years ago and thus the high quality of that publication is included here. Since it covers each president in its less than 300 pages, this is admittedly an overview / introduction to the presidents and does not go into depth on any issues. But given that this was its purpose the book does a fine job. Younger readers will find the pictures and captions get across many of the main points, while older readers can use it as a springboard to seek out more in-depth books focusing on either specific presidents or specific events in America's past.

Speech Fundamentals: A Contemporary Approach
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (August, 1992)
Authors: Susan Andersen and Burt Pryor
Average review score:

It was a good book!
But then, maybe I'm biased. Thanks to whoever wrote the nice review (maybe a former student or instructor who used it?). Actually, I'd love to take another run at the same subject one day. Recently, I was involved in another text review process and the standard texts out there have changed little in substance since we wrote our "alternative approach" almost 10 years ago! Sure, they are offering more bells and whistles, including cd-roms and pre-packaged on-line courseware. But where's the communication theory? Students are still being forced to take Speech, but, in many cases are not exposed to substantive discussion of communication theory. When students do have a chance to study persuasion, message theory and cognitive psychology in the context of a public speaking class, the class comes to life! Alas, it's purely dependent on the quality of the instructor, and most instructors of basic speech are ill-prepared to teach more than a "stand and deliver" kind of class. Burt, shall we take another run at this?

This was a darn good speech text
Alas, it has gone the way of honest interest in a theoretical approach to the teaching of public speaking.

What Do You Say to a Burning Bush?: Sermons for the Season After Pentecost (Middle Third: Cycle A, First Lesson Texts)
Published in Paperback by C S S Publishing Company (October, 1995)
Author: Steven E. Burt
Average review score:

Meditations that relate to modern life.
A nice collection of "positive thinking" meditations. And they're related to Old Testament texts, something we often miss out on in church because so much emphasis is placed on preaching from gospel texts and Paul's letters. This series touches on the Bible patriarchs. It's in easy language, too, with helpful stories and illustrations.

Very good sermon collection.
Simply stated, this is a good solid collection of Easter sermons from a mainline church pastor. Theologically sound and with helpful illustrations. A skinny little volume that makes you wish you had been present to hear the man preach the sermons. A good resource for other ministers to refer to.

Against Type: The Biography of Burt Lancaster
Published in Hardcover by Holiday House (October, 1995)
Author: Gary Fishgall
Average review score:

Increases appreciation of one of Hollywood's Greats
Chronicles the professional life and accomplishments of one of Hollywood's most loved stars, Burt Lancaster. I was disappointed with the lack of insight into the personal life of Lancaster, but as a biography of his professional life it was excellent. It was fascinating to read of the diametrically opposite views that co-stars and directors had for him, ranging from ardour to hate. This is an unbiased portrait of a great star

Boxing: Photographs by Larry Fink
Published in Hardcover by powerHouse Books (June, 1997)
Author: Burt Randolph Sugar
Average review score:

Fink's Fighters
Larry Fink has captured the essence of the heart of boxing throughout this book. He's caught specific moments which go unnoticed on a daily basis in the gym and made them immortal. Most specific and touching are those photos of Fighter and Trainer in the locker room before the fight. An excellent, well written dabble on the history of boxing accompanies the photos as well. nice.

A beautifully photographed collection of private moments
If you're researching Burt Reynolds, this book is a must-have. Since I was, it was of great help to me. The photography of Lisa Smith is great. I found out she recently passed away and all the proceeds of the book now go to a charity she contributed to. A great behind-the scenes biography.

THE QUOTE ABOVE IS FROM CHARLES MANSON,AND THE MANSON FAMILY MURDERS FORM THE BASIS FOR THIS DISTURBING LOOK AT GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES.
